below - Not all the island was ravaged. The men of the 801st were surprise at the lush greenness of most of the island after having seen black and white newsreels that portrayed it as a blasted and barren waste.

below - The large civilian population had suffered tremendously during the battle, and although unshure of the new conquerors, needed their help to survive. Many Oknawans, who spoke a different dialect from Home Island Japanese and viewed themselves a a different people culturally and politically, helped the Americans after the battle.
