Dad was inducted into the U.S. Army on 18 January, 1943. He was given seven days before he was to head for basic training, and naturally the Army came up with a complex dance of rules and paperwork to cover the week Dad was "released from active duty" into the Enlisted Reserve Corps. The rules were spelled out in the document below: you're on your own, we won't feed you, we won't pay you - but you're ours now, so be on your best behavior and keep this letter on you at all times. And don't show up drunk.
